Global Game Jam 2024!

This was my 3rd year attending the Global Game Jam.

This year instead of working with implementation tools like Wwise. I focused on creating SFX and Music for games. As with previous years, I focused on one teams game in particular but helped out where ever possible with others. I also challenged myself to only use personally recorded sounds that I could create during the jam.

The main focus of my efforts this year was the game The Last Laugh by team Funny Fighting. This was a 2D smash-like game.

For this I produced all audio assets for UI, Character Foley/ONOs, Combat and Music. The initial idea was to have two characters to battle however only one was implemented by the end of the jam and unfortunately this meant a lot of the audio assets were also unimplemented.

The Clown character was distinguishable via its squeaky feet and high pitched exertions.

The Jester character was distinguishable by its bells on its shoes and lower pitched exertions.

The UI design was inspired by the jesters bell feet and had a select, back and UI hover sfx.

The games Music was 2 short looping segments, one for the menu and one for the battle zones.

As mentioned above I also produced sounds or music for other games. These are listed below and any work is explained with them.

(S)Laughter by Running_Stickman, VonDare, Dave_Sheard, DustyGreen (itch.io) For this game I created a blunderbuss sound effect using only mouth noises and impacts I recorded. This fit the vibe of the game perfectly. This was implemented in the playable build by their music designer. I also designed doom-like damage noises, ammo pickup and a reload sound but these were not implemented.

Paws of Deception by Amicable Animal (itch.io) For this game I wrote a classic Gameboy music inspired loop to play over the main menu. This utilised 4 channels that each carried one instrument. 1 noise/drum, 1 repeating progression, 2 counter melody instruments. This however, was sadly not implemented for the end of the jam.

Navigational Weather System

This project is my honours project, the culmination of my honours project literature research and time at Edinburgh Napier. Project Description: This project aims to alleviate the growing trend of over reliance on UI as the method for conveying information in games.  Inspirited greatly by the implementation of navigation in Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch Production, 2020. Ghost of Tsushima game uses sound and animation in order to guide users to locations within the world. This is what I wish to build upon but remove the reliance on UI to guide the player. As while Ghost of Tsushima is not overly cluttered the majority of new open world game releases wish to convey so much information to the player the screen becomes cluttered.  Technical Description: The project is a Unity asset store project that has been integrated with Wwise. The weather system was created and then sound designed using the Wwise Soundseed air, woosh and grain plugins. This project allowed  me to le...

Train Sim World 5: ScotRail Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street Redesign

This redesign is based upon the ScotRail eXpress: Edinburgh to Glasgow TSW5 DLC created by Rivet Games. With this project I aimed to gain a better understanding of the requirements of train recording. This was to attempt to gain some insight to the methods that are used to simulate the sound of the train in the game.  I went out and recorded two lengths of the route over the course of a day, taking time in each station to search for sounds on the outside of the train only audible when idle or when departing.  These were then edited to fit a pre-created video of gameplay. It was an interesting experience especially when trying to record clean audio on a commuter service! Software Used: Reaper Final Cut  OBS

Tufty2040 Digital Badge Project

This was a personal project I worked on for attending Games Talks Live. Project Description: This project is a personal interest project project utilising the tufty2040 a digital badge running micropython. I wanted to do this to make myself stand out while attending networking events.   Technical Description: I created myself multiple screens within a script, one to be the splash screen displaying my name and face the others displaying QR codes to my LinkedIn and Portfolio Site. These were based off the example code provided with the device however, I altered these to suit my needs.  Project Images:
